How to Raise Your Children to Become Bilingual and Its Subtle Advantages

By admin on August 30, 2011

Between birth and age 7 is the best time to learn a foreign language. New research shows how children’s brains can become bilingual so easily. Eventually, findings that scientists hope, could help the rest of us learn a new language a bit easier. To start with, it is essential, that at least one parent must have an understanding with both the languages that you hope to teach him or her. Many times bilingual parenting can be challenging because you must not ease into using only the more comfortable language. Both languages are equally important and hence, it is equally important that you do not overplay by not using your native language enough.

You can raise your children to become bilingual by following steps;

Always repeat common expressions in both languages. Since children learn by repeating and following examples, listening to consecutive phrases in different languages will teach them the words that mean the same thing. As they mature, this will make them more comfortable with both languages.
Do make sure to refer to the same things in both languages. Even if only one parent knows both languages, each can learn to call things by their names in either language.
If both parents speak both languages, make rules about the times that each language will be spoken. then change which language will be spoken at what time. Even if a child is too young to develop an understanding to what you are saying, they will still learn something by listening to you.
Labelling household items in both languages is a good idea. This will also help you remember to use both languages for the object. It will also be of help if only one of the parents speaks both languages. If your child can already read, these labels will help her or him as much as well. You can make these labels by writing the name of an item in both languages and taping it to the item. If you say prayers at night, say the same prayer in both languages. Establish bilingual routines for other daily tasks as well.
Use technology as a tool to teach your child as well.  Technology greatly increases the input of languages to one’s mind. Use the internet. Bring educational computer games and high-tech toys for your kid. Allow multilingual channels on television and radio to be played. Bring home video CDs and DVDs, which will not just be entertaining, but educative and informative as well.
Do some research and find out schools where your child will have an exposure to the language you are trying to teach your child. Writing in the second language as well is another tool to encourage bilingual atmosphere around your child.Although still there are few bilingual accounting in Tokyo,  it might be increase in the future.
